This topic is for ideas for talks on topics not covered in the other threads?
Session formats you'd like to see?
Or other kinds of content that would make the conference more compelling and interesting?

Please let us know!

How about "Better sound insulation"? :)

While everybody loves the geek-out appeal of showing sci-fi movies in the common area, being able to follow the dialog from within a session in a nearby room is a little much.

How about a call for a better online scheduling tool? There were several complaints in 2005 about the new system and how hard it was to use it to actually plan your day and search for things ("What's being offered between noon and 3 on Wednesday" is a pretty valid use case that was impossible to hit, IIRC).

The tool (and maybe the printed guide) should list sessions and BOFs by time/date and not only by topic. With so many sessions at the same time you have to choose which ones you'll attend.

Would it be possible to open/expose the J1 schedule as a web-service (in addition to the regualar interface made available)? Then we could have people whip up scheduling tools as they seem fit. This is a developer event after all. :)

I'd like to see an end to the t-shirt hurling contest. I've been to two J1's (2003 and 2004), and it already seemed like something that had ceased to be fun and was continuing out of habit alone.

After long, fitfully organized, and often inert keynote speeches, seeing some engineers trying and failing to get a trebuchet to hurl a t-shirt is not inspiring, it's irritating. Also, what the heck does it have to do with Java?

Idea: half the audience is developers, with Tomcat or JBoss on their notebooks. If J2EE 5.0 is so easy to develop for, hold a virtual t-shirt contest at the end of the general sessions - define a t-shirt as a SOAP message, and challenge attendees to whip up a web service on the spot that can "catch" and process the virtual shirt in some meaningful way. Have attendees enter their names and IP's on a server, and the host can hit those laptops from an on-stage machine in the order they sign up. Fun for them, and proves that Java still has whipitupatude.

How about a Web Started application with a really neat and functional interface to use for planning the sessions for the attendees? Wouldn't that rock?

I just happen to know that such an application is in the making...

Start the general sessions (keynotes) on time, and get the doors open early enough to get everyone in. Every day last year, there was a queue wrapped around Metreon and Yerba Buena Gardens, and all the keynotes started late (and some of them went long, conflicting with break-out sessions). When attendees pay $1000+ to attend, it's insulting to make them wait outside for 30-60 minutes while show staff gets their act together.

How about topics on education and the academe? I would want to contribute on initiatives in Open Courseware.

I'll take this chance to mention how much I liked having the chair massages available!

How about free t-shirts in other sizes than XL? Not everyone has an American sized body. :-)

Does anyone know what this year's bag will be like? I need a backpack for my podcasting gear, but if that's the kind of bag that conference materials will come in, then I won't bother bringing one.
