Maya 2008 export to Collada

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone has had success exporting a Maya 2008 file on Mac to collada for use in Wonderland v0.5.
I downloaded and installed the CG.framework from NVIDIA and the ColladaExporter3.05B. Then, in Maya I checked load and autoload on COLLADA.bundle under Window>>Settings/Preferences>>PlugInManager. From there, I was able to export files into .dae format. I tried a simple model of some spheres and cubes and then a more complex model of an urban village. Also, saw the free transform post from earlier and tried that on my models.
Unfortunately, neither of my models were viewable. I tried scaling larger (1.0, 5.0, 10.0) but still was unable to see model.
Can anyone provide tips for troubleshooting? Also, would I be better off just using Google Sketch Up? I am working on a Business Collaboration project for a Government contract.
Hope I provided enough information. I'm new to these discussion forums.
Also, thanks for great presentations at Java One. They were the highlight of Conference for me.
Chris

Try the ColladaMaya exporter from Feeling Software. That's the best collada exporter from Maya that we know of.

If you want to stick with Maya, Doug's suggestion makes sense, but if you don't plan to take advantage of May's high-end graphics capabilities like normal maps and bump maps, you might make your life easier by using SketchUp instead. In SketchUp, just export your models using the Google Earth (.kmz) format and you should be able to drag and drop them into the Wonderland window.

Chris,
Have you made any progress in this area? I'm interested in getting some models I've created in maya to export/import correctly into Wonderland and I'm curious of the various settings in use.
thanks,
jW

I will be testing this and documenting the best settings for exporting models next week.

Doug,
I have some basic "building blocks" and tetris shapes in an .mb if you'd like them for your testing this week...
Should I send/upload somewhere?

Thanks, Doug.

Doug,
Did we ever figure out the best/correct options to use when exporting to collada?
thanks,

I haven't gotten to this yet - but I am aiming to finish it up the later half of next week. If you want to use standard materials, the standard settings should be fine. The only one I want to test is normal mapping - which I'm pretty sure doesn't come straight through cleanly. Often times, I will need to enable triangulation if the exporter supports it. That is because our loader doesn't support every geometry type.
As you may have heard, we are trying to finalize all the core api's soon, and so that's why some of the module work (like loaders) have been on a lower priority for now. I'll get back to this one very soon.
Thanks for the ping though. :^)
Doug.

Hi,
Sorry for the late reply. Been away for a few days. Thanks for help Doug and Nicole. Actually have been exploring Sketch Up and seems easy to use. Lynda.com has some great starter tutorials.
jW, to get my Maya 2008 models, I downloaded the fbx plug in at the website below and then imported into Google Sketchup Pro as a .dxf file. From Sketch Up, I was able to save as a .skp or .kmz for use in Wonderland. You can experiment with Google Sketch Up Pro for 8 hours.

As an addendum to Doug's recommendation for FeelingCollada's exporter, while it does seem to be the most complete exporter out there, it uses nonstandard extensions for some things. This can lead to files not loading as intended. Just something to watch out for. Interesting workaround with that convoluted pipe from MB to dxf to kmz!

What's the toolchain for MB to dxf to kmz? If it works, I'd like to test and document it.
Doug.
