JMC on a real project

Hi
We think to use JMC in a several million dolar project. In this project mpeg4 and telemetry data are contained in a transport stream. Java application will display telemetry data on video and allow some operations like zoom, chaning contrast etc. on the video file. Target operating system is Windows. I know JMC is preview stage now but we have more than 6 months to complete the project and 1.0 release is very close. Do you think that it is risky?

Short answer, yes. If the JMC doesnt give you what you want after waiting 6 months for the release, you are screwed, and Sun certainly dont hold any responsibility for that. However, I think that the JMC should do heaps as thats it purpose, maybe you should contact Sun about this, they could tell you all you need to know about it, including planned features, possibly...

I too think that is risky, for a number of reasons:
1) if you do not get a release in time, the license agreement on any pre-release might prohibit you from using it at all;
2) you don't explicitly state if the current pre-release is feature complete for you;
3) are you really going to make a decision for a multi million dollar project based on feedback you get in this forum?

Hi,
Of course we wont decide only with the feedback we received in this form. We are also internally evaluating jmc and other alternatives and a DAR process will follow this study. We are a CMMI Level 5 company and this kind of decisions take a lot of effort.
I have also strong confidence in java forums. Because I usually receive answers directly from the person in development team.

Hi,
We have decided to go with JMF. JMC does not provide features we need and documentation is very poor currently. We could not find a way to demultiplex mpeg2-ts with JMC. Currently we are working on JMF.

If you run into limitations with JMF, you might want to look into FMJ (fmj-sf.net). It is a work in progress, and it is open-source. MPEG support can be theoretically implemented with ffmpeg-java, a subproject.
