JXTA Community - we need your help and feedback for next JXSE releases

Hello JXTA Community,

You should probably be aware that Sun is looking for increasing the
JXTA Community participation since the last Board of Director
elections.

In the past weeks, I had some phone talks with Bernard Traversa (JXTA
Technical Lead), Mike "Bondolo" Duigou (previous JXSE release lead),
Vanessa Williams and Mark Petrovic (newly elected JXTA Board members)
about this subject and Sun confirmed that they want to help the JXTA
Community decide what to put into a JXTA JXSE release and define its
release date.

As you may remember, the current JXTA J2SE version 2.5, named
"Turduken" was released in November 2007 which is nearly already one
year ago. Moreover, there is currently no real plan defined for the
next release.

As we have now a strong opportunity to shape our future releases, I am
asking to the JXTA Community its suggestions for the next JXTA J2SE
version.

Basically we have now two options:

1) Release the current trunk (seed for the 2.5+ release named
"Cassoulet") as it is before end of November 2008. This current trunk
contains nice improvements compared to 2.5.

Please look at this url to see its status and the bugs already fixed:

https://jxta-jxse.dev.java.net/issues/buglist.cgi?resort=1&Submit%20query=Submit%20query;component=jxta-jxse;issue_status=NEW;issue_status=STARTED;issue_status=REOPENED;target_milestone=Cassoulet;email1=;emailtype1=exact;emailassigned_to1=1;email2=;emailtype2=exact;emailreporter2=1;issueidtype=include;issue_id=;changedin=;votes=;chfieldfrom=;chfieldto=Now;chfieldvalue=;short_desc=;short_desc_type=fulltext;long_desc=;long_desc_type=fulltext;issue_file_loc=;issue_file_loc_type=fulltext;keywords=;keywords_type=anytokens;field0-0-0=noop;type0-0-0=noop;value0-0-0=&order=issues.priority%2C%20issues.issue_id

2) Wait a bit more (January / February 2009) to get more bug fixes and
new features. In that case we will need to define which bugs must be
fixed and the features which will be implemented. Completing these
tasks will depend upon contributions from the JXTA Community.

Mike reminded us that this extra time would greatly help integrating
some of the existing work/patches that have been contributed by JXTA
Community members:

- signed advertisements
- xquery
- ... (your work here)

We look forward to your comments, suggestions, ideas and help about
those two options.

I am also reminding the JXTA Community that we always need
contributors for helping and taking care of the various aspects of the
JXTA JXSE / JXME / C releases (I mean developers, testers,
documentation reviewers). Obviously the more help and people, the more
and faster we will be able to release.

Cheers,

Fabrice Di Meglio

Personally I would rather take option 2 for several reasons. Would a November 2008 release contain any new features from "Turduken" 2.5 or just new improvements? If it is the latter then I find it more justifiable to wait a couple of more months for bug fixes and new features that would better qualify it as a new release from 2.5. Can you please specify or document somewhere what exactly are the improvements currently in the trunk? Also knowing the new features and contributions from the community that would ultimately or potentially define the "Cassoulet" release would be very helpful as well and enable us as a community to test those particular features if they are chosen to be part of the new release.

Thank you.

Hi!
I'm with wwilliams, we'd rather wait.

I've performed some cool changes on CMS service that I've included in my app.
I'm very very busy right now but from next week you can count on me with CMS or other stuff.
