Come to JavaOne and showcase your Wonderland project!
The Project Wonderland team is looking forward to JavaOne, and this year we'll have two demo pods in the JavaOne Pavilion and a technical session. We're really looking forward to showcasing the latest Project Wonderland developments and meeting you, the members of the Wonderland community face to face.
We know that you're working on some really exciting Wonderland-based projects, and we'd love to see your work. We also think JavaOne attendees will be interested in seeing how people are using Wonderland to build compelling virtual environments.
If you'd like to join us at JavaOne and showcase your work, enter the Wonderland JavaOne Showcase Competition!
About the competition
The goal of the competition is to provide a way for members of the Wonderland community to showcase their work at JavaOne. We will award one JavaOne Conference Pass to the winner of the Wonderland JavaOne Showcase Competition. This pass gives you access to the four day Conference program and the JavaOne Pavilion. In addition, we will provide up to 3 JavaOne Pavilion Passes so your colleagues can come to the Pavilion to show off your work and answer questions.
What can I submit?
You can submit a virtual world, an application, or any innovative use of Wonderland. Judging will be done by Sun's Wonderland team and will be based on how well your project solves a business problem, addresses an educational goal, or fulfills an entertainment promise. Visual appeal and stability of the software will also be taken into consideration.
We will have a limited number of demo systems at the show, so your demo must be able to co-exist with other demos running on a single Wonderland server. We have a lot of virtual space in Wonderland, though, so feel free to use it!
How do I submit my demo?
Submitting a demo is a two part process. First, e-mail wonderland-showcase@sun.com by March 21st with a short proposal indicating your intention to submit a demo. Finally, on April 6th, send us the working code. Winners will be announced on April 14th.
Here's the process in detail:
1. Demo Proposal - March 21
Your demo proposal should include the following information:
1. Project name 2. Type of project (e.g., virtual world, application, extension, hardware etc.) 3. Category (open source community project, student project, commercial etc.) 4. Names of developers 5. Demo description (up to one page or ~500 words) 6. Demo requirements (system requirements: minimum graphics card, minimum cpu/memory, input devices) 7. Current status (idea, work in progress, mostly complete, complete) 8. Project web site (optional)
Demo proposals should be sent to wonderland-showcase@sun.com by March 21, 2008.
We'd like to see screenshots of your demo, or a video of it in action. If your demo is complete, you could even set up a Wonderland demo server for us to check out.
2. Demo deadline - April 6
The demo submission deadline is April 6, four weeks before JavaOne. By that date you will need to provide us with:
1. demo code 2. complete instructions on how to install, configure and run your demo 3. one or more screenshots of your demo (please hide the chat panel) 4. optionally, a narrated video demo. We'll make this available on the Wonderland web site if you win
Please make sure that your demo runs on the latest Wonderland source code. We'll be busy getting ready for JavaOne, so we'll have limited time to debug installation problems. So, make sure your demo is easy to install.
Note that Sun may use screenshots, videos and descriptions that you submit to the showcase competition for publicity purposes, during and after the competition.
4. Winners announced - April 14
We'll review all of the demos and announce the winning project, and runners up on April 14.
We're really looking forward to seeing your submissions and meeting you at JavaOne 2008!
-- Project Wonderland Team @ Sun Microsystems
FAQ:
1. How do I send you my demo?
We'll provide an upload site for people who have registered for the competition. Details will be provided later.
2. My demo needs Internet access
Internet access is usually available to demo pods in the JavaOne Pavilion, but our past experience has been that it is unreliable. In general, it's safest to assume that you will not have reliable Internet access and your demo should be able to handle this gracefully. We'll have several systems networked together to demonstrate interactions between multiple users.
3. My demo has special hardware requirements
Space is limited in the demo pods, so we cannot accommodate space consuming or special demo hardware. We usually have high performance demo systems available with state-of-the-art graphics cards and these systems can be configured to run Solaris, Linux or Windows.
4. My demo is a commercial product, who do I talk to about legal issues?
Please contact us (wonderland-showcase@sun.com) with a brief description of the issues and we'll forward it to our legal team for review.
5. I don't live near San Francisco, will you pay for my travel and accommodation?
Unfortunately, we cannot provide travel or accommodation assistance.
6. How can I make a video of my Wonderland demo?
We're about to release a video recording extension to Wonderland which will allow you to create in-world movies. Here are some other tools you might consider:
Video Capture
Linux: xvidcap - http://xvidcap.sourceforge.net
Windows: Fraps - http:/www/fraps.com
Video Editing
Linux, Windows, Mac: Avidemux - http://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux
Mac: Final Cut Pro - http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/finalcutpro Adobe Premiere Pro - http://www.adobe.com/products/premiere
Windows: Virtual Dub - http://virtualdub.sourceforge.net
