I am unable to update to build 6. I get a 'Another version of this product is already installed...'.
If I go to add/remove to remove the old Java I now have a choice of:
1 Java 6 Family
2 Java 6 Update 2 (standard install)
3 Java SE Runtime Environment 6
4 Java SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

I am leaning towards removing 1...

Ideally it should update my existing install - but it should also STOP changing names every other release. Java has had 4324235 names since 1.1!

I did have a minor headache when I had a go at it last time...

Hopefully this is only a transient phenomenon.

I agree! To make matters worse the new "update" terminology conflicts with the numerical version number.

We used to have 1.5.1, 1.5.2 where the 1 and 2 denoted the update number. Now we have 1.5.0_01, 1.5.0_02 where the _01 and _02 denote the update number and the minor version number is never updated. They also tacked on a "b05" to denote the build number which adds further confusion.

Sun, please use the minor version number to denote the update number or drop the minor version number altogether from the numerical string (I prefer the former)!

Matzon:

Could you please specify the problem/ issue you are having? If I have 6uNb04 installed, when I try to install 6uNb06, a "YES_NO" dialog will show up & says "The software has already been installed on your computer. Would you like to reinstall it?" If you choose yes, it should remove b04 and install b06. Are you seeing anything different?

Before you install jre-6u5-ea-bin-b06-windows-i586-p-31_oct_2007.exe, which build 1.6.0_05 you have installed? Is that a JDK or JRE?

Which build is installed? 1.6.0_05 means Java 6 Update 5. I cannot reproduce your issue; therefore, it would be nice if you can provide detail steps in reproducing the issue.

Update: I can reproduce the issue now:
1. install 6uNb05 JRE
2. install 6uNb06 JRE

Thanks for reporting this issue.
