... or people asking questions on this list don't care about proper writing (or
even reading) anymore?

I've seen several messages in this list with more or less the same contents:

"I need such-and-such urgent"
"[Message sent by forum member 'darth hamtaro']"

I am *NOT* picking on english usage, just wondering if I should really bother
answering those messages. Some people does not motivate us to help answer their
questions, and I've received some messages (directly, not via the mailing list)
with just the problem statement!

Also, those people seldom sign their messages. OK, this was a rant. Sorry, long
day.

i'd psüber-strongly vote that these types of requests be met with
silence - i can't see anything in these mails that merit a response:
no hint of research, no humility, nothing. additionally, you've been
a near-saint in patience over these years, and you shouldn't feel an
eensy iota of remorse should you modify your general policy now.

Couldn't agree more!

I enjoy providing insight into a topic that I have some knowledge in, but
I don't have time, nor desire, to do everyone's work or school assignment.

Folks need to take the provided knowledge and do a little of their own R&D.

Rafael,

You have indeed made a lot of contributions and have filled in a number of
things that we at Sun should have done ourselves. It is understandable that
you would feel frustration with people who cannot make the effort to attempt
to understand things before posting to the mailing list and cannot explain
their problem once they do.

With respect to mailing list postings, before JAI moved to java.net we had a
policy that we published occasionally. This policy may be viewed here:

http://archives.java.sun.com/cgi-bin/wa?A2=ind0403&L=jai-interest&P=R32375&I=-3

I think that the general ideas in this policy still apply so it is worth
reading if in doubt.

Thanks,

Brian
