Hello.
In the company i work for we are actually checking various platforms for one of our upcoming product (netbeans and java3d based). We are investigating the use of a mac pro (with 4 geforce so that we have 8 displays.. yay!!). Has anyone used java3d on macs? What is your experience?
Thanks.

I ma not a Mac user and I did not try yet to make an install for jave3D new version 1.5. But here is what I know off:
A) 1.5=JOGL=Welcome back Mac Java3D 1.5 (last) version uses NOW JOGL to bind the Java3D API to the native OpenGL implementation. What does this provide? Well, since JOGL is ported to OSX your jav a3D application will work fine under a OSX machine.
B) There is still a (boring) issue of the install package you have to deal with. I personnaly use JWS (java web start). You can target different machine (windows, unix, Apple, ...). But I find it not so straight forward.
Maybe (I am not sure) java3D Sun will make a new easier install package for 1.5.1 next version. Who knows, it could make installs easier for different target... like Mac OSX.
Voila it is all I know. In clear osx should be "quite allright" from my point of View. Thierry

Merci Thierry. I will try to get my hands on an osx rapidly so i can at least make the basic tests before we go into deepness.
Any other advice? (please)

We (Halden VR Centre in Norway) have several Macs, including 2004 PowerBook G4s and G5 Macs to the latest MacBook Pros and a Mac Pro. The latest builds of Java 3D 1.5.1 run very well on all of them. I cannot think of any show-stopper type Mac-specific issues you need to be aware of. Just install the JOGL and Java 3D files into /Library/Java/Extensions and your all set. You will have to install the files manually, but that's no big deal for developers. For intenal use, I have made an installer for the Mac installs both JOGL and Java 3D into /Library/Java/Extensions. It's easy to build an installer using the PackageMaker software that comes with the Mac OS X developer tools.
Good luck, Michael Louka.

I am new to java 3d. But ive been using it for 2 weeks and havent had a single problem specific to using mac osx. Java is designed to be platform independent after all. You just need opengl and your good to go.

HI....
I currently use mac and everything runs fine, actually after the switch from Windows to Mac there's no upgrade to Vista, Just get your work done and make extensive testing and everything will go fine.
