Hi All,

I seem to see MIDI support broken in Mustang but I believe it is working in 1.4.x and maybe 1.5.x.
Has anyone else seen this problem?

Thanks.

It's not broken, it has been removed.

Edit: Actually, I'm not sure. I just recall it being talked about some time ago that MIDI ought to be removed to reduce the download size.

Well, why not look it up before posting? See [1] that says that MIDI is subject to removal in future versions of JRE.

*rolls his eyes*

"Well, why not" provide the answer if you have it? I'm on a cellphone, browsing JSR's to find out if JDK6 is that "future" JRE or not isn't my idea of fun.

removed? real freaking good. Just go ahead and break my apps. Hell, just distribute java.lang and make everything else optional.

Did you follow the link above before posting? It is *subject* to removal in *future* versions of JRE. Not in 1.4, not in 5.0, not in 6.0 and not in 7.0.

If you read the release notes of mustang (readme.html) there is an entry under JDK redistributables...

"jre/lib/audio/soundbank.gm

This MIDI soundbank is present in the JDK, but it has been removed from the JRE in order to reduce the size of the JRE download bundle. However, a soundbank file is necessary for MIDI playback, and therefore the JDK's soundbank.gm file may be included in redistributions of the JRE at the vendor's discretion. Several versions of enhanced MIDI soundbanks are available from the Java Sound web site: http://java.sun.com/products/java-media/sound/. These alternative soundbanks may be included in redistributions of the JRE."

I don't know if this is the reason, but could be...

Although I don't like descisions like removing midi I am really happy about the download-size improvement they archieved.

They got the Windows-offline-JRE installation package down to 12.5mb from somewhere at 15. Well that should it be worth :-)
