I would like to see presentations on Classpath and some of the alternative virtual machines. In past years, these kinds of projects were totally ignored. Perhaps now is a good time to make the larger Java community aware of these projects?

* Classpath
* JNode
* Cacao
* GCJ
* Sablevm
* etc.

Why? They're marginal at best, in competition (or trying to) with the product from the conference's organiser, and hardly interesting to almost everyone except those developing them...

If those kids want a conference, they can organise their own or beg Tim O'Reilly for a place as OSCON.

JWenting, Thats a bit unkind to the alternative VMs. Not everybody wants to use suns JVM and JDK to develop on Windows, Linux or Mac.

Actually my company has been eagerly waiting for classpath to be come usable for swing development. We create applications for pocket pc devices - there is no really good JVM for this platform and sun definitely doesn't seem interested in providing one. The open sourcing of the JDK has been very exciting for us as we see a great potential for using suns open source java libraries with some of these JVMs. We feel that they have a lot to contribute to the java world.

I agree with JWenting that alternative VMs are a niche at best. It seems like a good topic for a BOF session though.

You probably mean http://fosdem.org , where Mozilla, Python, X.org, KDE, GNOME, GNU Classpath, Jabber, Debian, Fedora, Gentoo, OpenSUSE etc. devs meet each year.

It's a good place to meet the cool kids that make interesting things happen in the Free Software world judging by http://fosdem.org/2007/schedule/speakers .

That being said, I've submitted a talk proposal or two to j1, as it'd be fun to see what conferences like that look like from the inside.

I would like to go to a class where we would practice the things that we need to know for contributing to the Open JDK project such as:
* compiling Hotspot and the class libraries on Windows, Solaris, and Linux platforms.
* development conventions.
* dos and don'ts
* Filing good patches.
* Getting improvements through the project management
* etc.
