Java Reporting Engines - Help!

Hi all,
does anyone here in the Java Development arena have some suggestions about cheap (if not free!) Java Reporting Engines? I currently use a reporting engine that gives me poor control over embedded pictures and has poor report composition tools, and I need to find a better tool.
... yes, you're thinking about Cystal Reports, maybe; that's the easy answer! Any other suggestion?

You should try JasperReports with ORDesigner it worked just fine for me.

Hi
I have tried using JAsperreports and tried to integrate with Eclipse. Iam having some problems. Need some help on this. Can I write to you directly so that the forum is not cluttered with information which other people already know ?

The data warehouse team within my company just did a big evaluation of open source reporting tools to replace various other pay for tools including crystal reports. Their outcome was to use jasper and ireports.

Have been using this same combo for projects of all sizes and I am very satisfied (my co-workers are also). From time to time someone complains about the lack of a cross-tab format (like crystal) but this is not too hard to emulate, and it's compensated by having the ability to use the results of EJB CMP finders, Hibernate HQL queries and so on (any Java array or collection, besides XML files and SQL resultsets) directly as Report data sources.

I have been using JasperReports and IReport for about 6 months. I have used many reportwriters in the past and found that this has most of the functionality that I require. The ability to feed other data source (other than JDBC) means we have created some very powerful reports that would have been difficult if not impossible with direct database access only.
IReport is excellent, but can be a little quirky, but once you get in to it, it is easy and quick.
Probably the only downside is templates, these are not dynamic, so you can't apply a style to all of your reports and then update your style template at a later date and have this applied to all of your reports.

I have used Formula One's eReport Engine and have found it to be quite adequate. Recently the Eclipse Foundation has released the initial beta version of it's report engine BIRT. You can find more about BIRT at http://eclipse.org/birt.

I may be biased but I think http://www.windwardreports.com is really good. And very easy as you use Microsoft Word to design the reports.

Looks like it's years too late for you, but for anyone else looking these daysa few friends of mine are using Docmosis which seems pretty good. They were sick of IReports and looking for another way of doing reports. http://www.docmosis.com.

Hi,
I recommend RAQ Report to you , and I am sure that it can achieve your purpose easily . After I have used it for half a year , I find that it focuses on Quick Report Development , Easy Report Publish , and Seamless Embedding Deployment for Business Intelligence . At the same time , it is a pure Java reporting tool, which is very simple for learning.
