Hackers and Painters
Hackers and Painters is a roller-coaster ride through the mind of Paul Graham -- delving into such diverse areas of life as why nerds are unpopular in school as well as why hackers should use dynamic typed languages. As the title implies, there are many references in the book to Paul's experience as a painter, shaping his philosophical views of life as a programmer from an artists perspective. I was especially drawn to many concepts in this book, and I'm excited to discuss this, because of my own experience as a classical percusionist and electronic composer. Life, art, science, programming -- it's all up for discussion.

The Mythical Man Month
Since the first publication of The Mythical Man-Month in 1975, no software engineer's bookshelf has been complete without it. Many software engineers and computer scientists have claimed to be "on their second or third copy" of the book. Now, Addison-Wesley is proud to present the 20th anniversary edition-and first revised edition ever-of Fred Brooks's now legendary collection of essays on the management of computer programming projects. The 20th Anniversary edition is an updated, enhanced re-release of the Brooks classic. Included are all of the existing essays that were originally presented, with the addition of three new essays assessing the current status of software project management. Brooks's well-known 1986 article, No Silver Bullet, is also included. This 20th Anniversary edition is a major event in computer publishing. Refactoring to Patterns
Refactoring to Patterns is the marriage of refactoring -- the process of improving the design of existing code -- with patterns, the classic solutions to recurring design problems. Refactoring to Patterns suggests that using patterns to improve an existing design is better than using patterns early in a new design. This is true whether code is years old or minutes old. We improve designs with patterns by applying sequences of low-level design transformations, known as refactorings.

Beyond Java
In Beyond Java, Bruce Tate (co-author of Better, Faster, Lighter Java and Spring: A Developer's Notebook) looks at how Java became the most rapidly and widely successful language of all time, and the decisions and compromises it had to make to get to the top. He then argues that, for the first time in a decade, conditions are right for major innovations to occur outside the Java realm. He says Java's inescapable limitations are catching up with the language, and that developers need to start being aware of other languages and frameworks, and shows some prime candidates for your attention.
